Although with one hour delay, the protesting Greek farmers provided a “window” for passage of freight vehicles through Kulata – Promachon checkpoint from 11:00 to 16:00 on 12th of February. The blockade in the interior of Greece continues. The Greek farmers fulfilled the agreed arrangements to allow freight vehicles through the border. According to the agreement between representatives of the Bulgarian government and the protesting Greek farmers from 3 days ago, lorries will be allowed through the border crossing between 11:00 and 15:00 every day.
The queue of waiting lorries was about 2 km long as most the lories arrived 15 – 20 minutes before 11:00 hoping to avoid waiting for a long time.
Yordan Arabadzhiev, the Executive Director of the Bulgarian Union of International Road Carriers said that some trips were cancelled due to the expected national strike in Greece.
Earlier on 12th of February, Bulgaria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminded that main transport connections in the mainland of Greece would remain blocked at different times of the day. The motorway between Athens and Thessaloniki will be opened until midday on 12th of February, so that the farmers can get to the Greek capital with their agricultural equipment in order to join the protests.
Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry advises Bulgarian citizens to avoid large-scale public events and to get informed about the current situation before deciding to travel. The ministry also advises the citizens to avoid undertaking risky journeys by motor vehicles, if possible.
