GERB and MRF propose accelerated negotiations for new Nuclear Power Plant units

Kozloduy NPP to start negotiations with the potential builder of new units at the plant - the South Korean company Hyundai. This is what MP Delyan Dobrev of GERB-UDF and Stanislav Anastasov of MRF propose. The draft decision will be considered on Wednesday at a meeting of the energy committee in the National Assembly.

The draft decision states that the National Assembly decides that the subsidiary of the nuclear power plant - Kozloduy NPP - New Capacities - should start negotiations with the only remaining candidate for the construction of the seventh and eighth units - the South Korean company Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co.,Ltd.

The draft also stipulates that the maximum cost of the first stage of the project's engineering should not exceed €200 million. It also stipulates that a mandatory 30% of the plant's construction activities must be carried out by Bulgarian companies as subcontractors. The selected company will have to carry out the construction, design and commissioning of the new units using AP1000 technology. The new units are expected to have a capacity of 1,200 megawatts each.

Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant - New Capacities also announced today its investment proposal for the construction of the plant's eighth unit, so that an environmental impact assessment can be carried out.

At the end of next month, the US company Westinghouse is expected to submit a report announcing a first cost estimate for the new units. According to the Ministry of Energy, the price the ministery expects is to be no higher than $14 billion. The price of electricity, on the other hand, should not exceed 127 BGN per megawatt-hour.

The new unit 7 of Kozloduy NPP is expected to be built using the AP1000 technology and will be the first project of its kind in Europe.
