GERB Submits Proposal to Abolish Ad Hoc Parliamentary Committee of Inquiry Into the Activities of George and Alexander Soros

The GERB parliamentary group on December 5 submitted to the National Assembly’s registry a draft resolution to terminate the ad hoc committee tasked with establishing facts and circumstances related to the activities of George Soros, Alexander Soros and their foundations in Bulgaria, including their financing of Bulgarian individuals, legal entities and NGOs, as well as their alleged links to political parties, magistrates, educational institutions, media outlets, business structures and state authorities.

“The Members of Parliament have no legal basis to investigate private individuals or foundations. The National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria is not an investigative body,” the draft’s motives state.

The document further stresses:
“Ad hoc committee with such a remit attacks civil society, promotes an authoritarian trajectory and is incompatible with the principles and values of parliamentary democracy. Democracies function through rules and laws, not through witch-hunts.”

The proposal notes that the committee’s scope of work exceeds the constitutionally defined powers of the National Assembly, which exercises legislative authority and parliamentary oversight. Citing the Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly, the motives underline that temporary committees may conduct inquiries and gather information on specific issues, but cannot investigate private individuals or foundations.

Terminating the committee’s activities, the draft argues, would be a step towards restoring public trust, reducing polarisation in Bulgarian society, and freeing time and resources for MPs to focus on citizens’ priorities.
