"In the near future, we expect a lot more infections with the Delta variant of the coronavirus. But this is expected also because it is much more transmissible and makes epidemic outbreaks faster," the director of the National Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, Prof. Dr. Iva Hristova, said at a briefing on June 28 in relation to the 7 cases of the Indian variant and 1 case of South African variant found in Bulgaria.

The Delta variant spreads much easier. The infected patients identified in the country were in contact, with each other they are Bulgarians and there will certainly be a lot of cases, which will happen in a few weeks, said Prof. Hristova. She did not deny that a new wave is possible in the middle of summer.

During the last week, 200 samples were sequenced and analysed at the National Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases. Of these, 190 were confirmed as the UK variant. These are samples sent from the country. In samples sent by "Pirogov" emergency hospital in Sofia, 7 cases from the Delta variant were proved (the Indian variant) and 1 case from the Beta variant - ie. the South Africa variant.

These are samples sent for sequencing in the period 6-14 June.

The Beta variant was confirmed in a foreigner residing in Bulgaria. He has had very mild symptoms and was quarantined in Sofia.

In the other 7 cases, only one of them was hospitalized. He was admitted in a very serious condition, but is currently well. The other 6 have very mild symptoms and are under home treatment and quarantine.

4 of the infected persons are in the age group 30-40, the other four are in the age group 40-50. 6 are men and two are women. Those infected with the Delta variant work in one enterprise - Elektrotransport - Sofia. Their contacts are already being identified

In any case, personal anti-epidemic measures must be very strictly observed, added Prof. Hristova.

According to her, it has been definitely proven that the vaccines that are administered in our country cover and work quite effectively against these variants.
