Major cities in Bulgaria cancel New Year firework displays

Many municipalities in the country cancelled the fireworks displays on New Year's Eve to support the Four Paws Foundation's campaign "Beautiful for Us is Terrifying for Them".

The aim is to keep stray animals and pets from being stressed by loud bangs. The cancelling of fireworks displays will also contribute to cleaner air.

It turns out that in addition to bringing joy and mood, New Year's fireworks can be stressful. The Green Balkans Wildlife Rescue Centre knows this best.

"When there are fireworks, the birds are constantly bumping into our aviaries, hitting the nets, the beams, injuring their wings, which we then have to process in the outpatient clinic. They are experiencing huge stress. So, really, as much as we can stop these firework displays is much better and more favourable for all living creatures ", explained Dr. Rusko Petrov.

That is why the municipality of Stara Zagora was the first to refuse to shoot fireworks in the sky for the New Year. Instead, the BGN 6,000 saved for the fireworks will be donated to the student Diana Mitova, who seriously injured in a car accident at a crossroads in the city.

The mayor's administration is sure that without a lavish fireworks New Year's Eve will be far calmer not only for the animals, but also for the elderly and children.

"They feel like they are on the battlefield," said Stara Zagora Deputy Mayor Milena Jeleva.

Bangs in the centre of Rousse caused a wave of outrage on social networks, especially since the use of pyrotechnics was banned by order of the mayor before the holidays.

Four alerts have been filed in the past ten days.

Still, there will be New Year's fireworks in Rousse.

"We have a licensed company to carry out this fireworks display. We have notified the Ministry of Interior about the upcoming event," Ignatov said.

However, Sofia replaced the traditional New Year's fireworks with a light show and relied on air quality.

"In this way we contribute to lessen the level of fine dust particles. We need to think in a more environmentally friendly way," said Desislava Bileva, deputy mayor of Sofia.

Veliko Turnovo, Kyustendil, Burgas and Plovdiv also followed the good example and refused to welcome the new year 2022 with fireworks.
