Gas prices, diversification of sources, energy security and clean energy are the main topics of the meeting of the Chairpersons of Energy Committees of the Parliaments of the European Union held in Sofia on 14th of May. The event is part of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU.
Tsveta Karayancheva, President of Bulgaria’s Parliament said that key issues in the Bulgarian presidency are building a stable energy alliance, the legislative proposals from the Clean Energy for All Europeans package, renewable energy targets by 2013, and the gradual and economically justified transition to a low-carbon economy.
Katarina Sikov-Magni, Head of Networks and Regional Initiatives Unit, EC Directorate-General for Energy: We are still largely dependent on one source of natural gas supply, resulting in higher prices for consumers, including for citizens and for business. We realize that if this region has access to natural gas at comparable prices to those in Western Europe, it can save € 4 billion a year, she said.
