"Navalny" with Bulgarian journalist Christo Grozev wins Oscar for best documentary

A Bulgarian is among the winners of the most prestigious Oscar film awards

The film "Navalny", in which the Bulgarian journalist Christo Grozev takes part, won the Oscar for best documentary at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Monday, March 13.

A historic moment that makes us proud of the recognition, but also of the courage and tremendous work behind this film project.

“Thanks to everyone here.My husband is in prison only because he told the truth. My husband is in prison only because he defended democracy. Alexei, I dream of the day when you will be free and our country will be free. Stay strong.” said Yulia Navalnaya, Navalny’s wife.

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” is the big winner with a total of 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress.

“Thank you so much to everyone here. You have all inspired me,” the director Daniel Kwan said. “I think that one of the things that I realized growing up is one of the best things we can do for one another is shelter each other from the chaos of this crazy world we live in.”

“This is proof that dreams do come true. And ladies, don't let anybody ever tell you you are past your prime. Never give up," Michelle Yeoh said upon receiving the statuette. For the Malaysian-born actress, it was her first Oscar from first nomination.

Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman and the second woman of colour after Halle Berry to receive an Oscar for a leading role. The film also won in the supporting male and female role categories. Jamie Lee Curtis thus received her first Oscar after 45 years on screen.

Brendan Fraser, who made a comeback with his awards season run for “The Whale,” won the Oscar for best actor. The role marked his return to the big screen as a leading man after a nine-year absence from major roles.

"I started this job 30 years ago. Things didn't always come easy, there were opportunities I didn't appreciate until I lost them. So I want to thank you for the recognition," Brendan Fraser said.

The other film considered a big favourite with as many as nine nominations, "The Banshees of Inisherin" received 4 statuettes. The war drama "Nothing New on the Western Front", based on Erich Maria Remarque's novel of the same name, won for best cinematography, best foreign film and best soundtrack.

"Avatar: The Nature of Water" won in the Best Visual Effects category.

The Oscars night will also go down in history for the memorable hug scene, repeated after 40 years, between Harrison Ford and Ke Huy Quan - the two actors played Indiana Jones and Malfoy in 1984 in the second series of the series - “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and now they meet again in the star moment for the then novice actor, who already owns the most coveted statuette.

Hosting the Oscras for the third time was comedian Jimmy Kimmel.
