Türkiye is bringing into service a new railway section between Çerkezköy and the Bulgarian border at the Kapıkule–Kapitan Andreevo border crossing. The 153-kilometre section forms part of the high-speed railway line connecting Türkiye with Bulgaria and the rest of Europe. The new central railway station in Edirne, the closest to the Bulgarian border, is also due to be officially opened today.
The ceremony will be attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, who is arriving in Türkiye following yesterday’s Corridor VIII conference in Sofia. Construction of the new railway line began in 2019 with joint funding from Türkiye and the European Union.
