Energy occupies a central role in Bulgaria’s strategic dialogue with the United States. “We are strongly committed to further deepening cooperation with the US in the field of civil nuclear energy, creating a more resilient energy market, strengthening Bulgaria’s role as a regional energy hub, and generating additional opportunities for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic,” said Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov at the opening of the third session of the Bulgaria–US Strategic Dialogue, held at the Council of Ministers on December 9.

The session was attended by US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia Christopher Smith, visiting Bulgaria in connection with the dialogue.

“We have set ambitious goals in energy cooperation, with a particular focus on civil nuclear energy. Bulgaria has made significant progress in diversifying its energy sector, reducing dependence on Russian energy resources,” Zhelyazkov noted.

The Prime Minister emphasised that Bulgaria and the US are “close friends, trusted partners and allies,” sharing a commitment to regional and global peace and security, sustainable economic growth, and the development of bilateral relations. He highlighted Bulgaria’s focus on expanding cooperation across all areas and strengthening the strategic partnership.

Zhelyazkov described security and defence cooperation as the foundation of the strategic partnership, praising US support for the modernisation of the Bulgarian Armed Forces. He referenced the acquisition of F-16 Block 70 fighter jets, the purchase of Stryker combat vehicles, and participation in NATO’s Multinational Battle Group in Bulgaria.

He also highlighted the role of innovation and new technologies in economic growth, noting that the third session of the Strategic Dialogue would explore projects in high-performance IT infrastructure and technology centres.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Bulgaria’s commitment to maintaining border security and continuing collaboration with the US under the Visa Waiver Program, including information exchange and security measures.

“I believe we will make progress in all key areas and open a new, even more ambitious chapter in our strategic partnership,” Zhelyazkov concluded, wishing participants a productive discussion.
