Bulgaria has met absolutely all the criteria for entering the waiting room of the Eurozone, Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said in a meeting with the German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, who is on an official visit to Bulgaria on June 18.
Borissov stressed to Maas that he hopes for support from Germany for Bulgaria’s bid to enter the Banking Union in July.
Prime Minister Borissov explained to German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas how well Bulgaria has dealt with the COVID-19 crisis, pointing out that the country has taken the most liberal measures in the EU.
Boyko Borissov, Prime Minister: But now we have a problem because we have to explain to the public that this is not a global conspiracy. It is very important now to recover the economies quickly.
During the German rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, Bulgaria hopes to enter the waiting room of the Eurozone.
Boyko Borissov, Prime Minister: We rely very much to join the Banking Union in July, when Germany assumes the EU presidency. We have fulfilled all criteria.
Heiko Maas expressed his satisfaction with visiting Sofia again.
Heiko Maas, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany: I am extremely glad to have the opportunity to be here, with you, in Sofia. We could not greet each other as warmly as last time - with a hug. But I hope things change for the better soon.
Later, in a meeting with Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva, Maas called on Bulgaria for support during the rotating presidency.
Heiko Maas, German Foreign Minister: Europe needs full support in resolving many issues. Many of them are extremely important for Bulgaria as well. Your country has taken very decisive and timely measures to combat the coronavirus. The results are such because of the measures taken by the government.
Zaharieva announced that Bulgaria supports the EC's proposal for post-crisis recovery in Europe.
Maas also said that Germany would support the initiative launched by Bulgaria for the accession of the Western Balkan countries to the EU.
