At a meeting on December 19, the President and the CITUB trade union insisted on a clear vision for the future of the coal in Bulgaria in the context of the Euroepan Green Deal envisaging net-zero carbon emissions. According to the Head of State, Bulgaria is working on the objective to make Europe a carbon-neutral continent, but this should not be at the expense of the competitiveness of the country, and the state should have a clear strategy for the development of the sector.
CITUB President Plamen Dimitrov has called on Bulgaria's statesmen to have an unequivocal voice in protecting the country’s energy independence.
According to the unions, Bulgaria may face a serious problem in view of the difficult financial situation of Maritza East 2 TPP and called for more activity towards the European programmes for the coal regions in transition.
President Radev said that Maritza East complex gives autonomy to Bulgaria and generates between 40% and 60% of the country's electricity, and the raw materials, technology and installations are Bulgarian.
