President Radev, mayors discuss measures to protect employment in coal energy sector

Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev, the chairperson of the National Association of Municipalities in Bulgaria and the mayors of Pernik, Stara Zagora and Kyustendil discussed the prospects of using the potential of the European platform "Coal Regions in Transition", the press secretariat of the President said on October 19.

At the initiative of the head of state, together with representatives of the executive power and mayors of setlements that would be potentially most affected from the Green Transition, discussed the measures for protection of the employment in the coal energy sector and Bulgaria’s competitiveness with modern technologies for electricity generation.

The Head of State highlighted the need for the timely preparation of individual regional plans through an in-depth study of the needs of the respective settlement, which would contribute to a smoother transition and the preservation of the livelihood of Bulgarian citizens. According to him, only with integrated efforts can industrial zones be developed and jobs preserved.

"The state's commitment is to stimulate large investors to create jobs in order to preserve people's livelihoods," Rumen Radev said.

Local government officials stressed that the Fair Transition Fund could mitigate the social and economic effects for those employed in the sector. Mayors said that it would be good if the financing is focused mainly to training and qualification of the employees and to support technological innovations of small and medium-sized enterprises in the energy sector, which they say is particularly important as these regions differ significantly in terms of geographical location, level of economic development and demographic prospects.
