The prices of 27 basic foods from the consumer basket rose by 17.1% in January this year compared to the same period last year, according to the Committee on Commodity Exchanges and Markets. Experts monitor basic foods such as sugar, flour, oil, butter, dairy and meat products. Food inflation is currently higher than that of other goods and services, and prices are projected to continue rising.

People with lower incomes in our country already spend 70% of their budget on food, according to a study by the Food and Drink Association. The increase is due to more expensive fuels, electricity, and also because of the pandemic.

Data from the Committee on Commodity Exchanges and Markets show that in January this year, compared to January last year, dairy products, chicken meat and oil prices rose significantly by as much as 36%.

On an annual basis, there is an increase in the prices of fruits and vegetables. The increase in the price of carrots hold a record - by 43% and cabbage - by 41%.

There is a formed, sustainable trend of rising prices. It is not sharp, but it is constant. And 2021 can be defined as a year in which the trend has shifted. The rise is now by 17% for almost all products, said Vladimir Ivanov, chairman of the Committee on Commodity Exchanges and Markets.

However, there is a decrease, albeit minimally, in the prices of certain foods compared to last year. The price of rice has fallen by 1% due to good world production, and pork has kept its price due to oversupply in Europe.

The energy crisis and higher prices of fertilizers and plant protection products have led to a 34% increase in the price of bread on an annual basis. The Bread for Bulgaria Association predicts that the increase will continue due to the twice as high costs of the bread producers.

It is possible that prices of bread will go up, but the increase will be very smooth. Because the market will not allow it and we cannot expect any serious price shocks, said Georgi Popov, Bread for Bulgaria Association.

Otherwise, the consumption of bread in the country is declining, but this is due to the decline in the number of the population. Consumers buy mainly mass types of bread - "Dobrudja" and white, but there is a trend for increased consumption of healthier, whole grain bakery products.
