Prosecutors and investigators across the country rallied in support of Prosecutor General after the attempt on his life

Prosecutors and investigators across the country on May 2 organised a demonstration in support of Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev, following the attempt on his life yesterday.

"Thank God there were no casualties yesterday. This blast could be in the home of any one of us. That is why we are here more than united and we will be here every day to show that we are united and we want a response from the state," said Siyka Mileva, a spokeswoman for the chief prosecutor.

“We are here to show that we are not afraid to continue working, we are not afraid to continue defending the values of the rule of law despite this extreme manifestation of hatred, which this terrorist act represents," added Nevena Zartova, administrative head of the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office.

Prosecutors, investigators and court officials from Ruse also came out in front of the Court House in the city in support of the Prosecutor General. They condemned the assassination attempt against him and said they were worried as it could happen to any of them.

"We are also worried that for years we have witnessed a political discourse that is detrimental to the prosecution and investigation as a profession and as a professional guild. We believe that all this undermines our authority, defames us and ultimately makes us vulnerable to everything that happens to the Prosecutor General and can happen to any of us", said Georgi Georgiev - District Prosecutor of Ruse.

Georgiev also said that the role of prosecutors is to be state prosecutors and to stand against criminals on behalf of the society, but in order to do their job successfully they need immunity, but they also need to feel security in Bulgarian citizens and in Bulgarian institutions.

Prosecutors, magistrates and court officials from Varna also expressed their support to Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev. They pointed out that their aim was to show unity against attempts to intimidate them for their official duties. Varna's appellate prosecutor Vladimir Chavdarov said that the assassination attempt against the prosecutor-general and his family was not only an attempted murder but an act of terrorism. This terrorist act is not only directed against him and his family, it is directed against the state. It is directed against the established constitutional legal order, it is directed against the independence of the judiciary, he said.
