socialist party leader not support istanbul convention resolution against corruption

The Istanbul Convention will not meet our support in any form - neither direct nor veiled - in a resolution against corruption, "the leader of the opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party, Kornelia Ninova, said on October 6 in a press release issued by the BSP press office.

"The basis of our foreign policy should be the national interest. Bulgaria has an interest in fighting corruption, to be a country in which there is freedom of speech, rule of law and separation of powers. In this sense - the resolution on Bulgaria, which the EP will vote tomorrow, deserves admiration and support, it is a true assessment of Borissov's corrupt government, but the resolution contains embarrassing texts criticizing parties and politicians in Parliament who do not support the Istanbul Convention and recommending that Bulgaria find a way to do so. The BSP does not support the convention and has a serious contribution to preventing it from being voted in the Bulgarian Parliament, " the BSP leader added.

"I have personally suffered many blows for this position. I have heard many accusations that by rejecting it I am changing the character of the party from left to conservative. I respect the different opinion, as well as our PES partners. Our parliamentary group has introduced a number of laws against violence against women, against the hate speech towards minorities, but the Istanbul Convention will not meet our support in any form - neither direct nor veiled - in a resolution against corruption, I will offer our MEPs, despite the fact that the resolution was initiated by Elena Yoncheva, to support the texts. concerning the rule of law, the fight against corruption and freedom, but do not support texts on the Istanbul Convention, taking into account the Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria and the national interest of our country," Ninova concluded.
