Yesterday we held a meeting of the Executive Bureau of the Bulgarian Socilaist Party (BSP), and next week we are due to convene the National Council of the BSP. We held the necessary discussions. The BSP became part of the joint government because of the need for stability and predictability in the country, Atanas Zafirov said during a briefing on December 12.

“Historically, the BSP has always placed the state and civil peace above narrow party interests. We entered this government with the conviction that it was necessary to stabilise the key systems of the state. We remain convinced that this government was a justified attempt to preserve our national image and values.”

The government submitted its resignation out of responsibility to the citizens precisely in the name of stability and calm, Zafirov explained.

The BSP clarified that in less than a year they had worked to increase incomes and preserve the Swiss rule. They had declared war on the so-called ‘houses of horrors’. They had also increased funding for sport, as well as for the construction of major sports facilities.

Atanas Zafirov stated firmly that they oppose Bulgaria providing security guarantees for Ukraine.

According to him, “the past weeks have been pivotal, and the governing majority has shown that it is able to hear the voice of the citizens and act reactively and adequately in the interest of society.”

“The path before us is clear,” Zafirov said – an open dialogue and the reintegration of people with left-wing views. “Can we all acknowledge that the people on the streets are sceptical of the entire political elite, regardless of whether they are in opposition or in government? Can we return to an honest, direct conversation about Bulgaria’s future?”

Zafirov stressed that it is crucial now not to allow statehood to be destroyed and to preserve stability, “because the shock is very serious”.

Rumen Petkov said that the processes of consolidation within the left are irreversible. According to him, “we were the ones most affected by the formation of the government”. He emphasised that they had demonstrated themselves to be a democratic organisation.

“With us, dialogue and debate about our identity are not matters of one-person decisions, and this collective spirit is a fact and will be preserved.” Petkov said they had no reason to worry about the actions of their ministers.

“The budget must be adopted, because otherwise many groups will suffer,” he concluded.
