Sparrow counting in Bulgaria will take place for second. In 2017, on the World Sparrow Day - 20th of March, the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) launched the campaign "We are Counting Sparrows". This year, sparrows will be counted in May, the society said.
On 8th of April, 2017, 550 people across the country counted 6,706 sparrows. The aim of BSPB is to establish the birds' preferences to the environment. That is why it is very important to involve as many people as possible from various areas.
The sparrows will be counted a month later this year, because in May, the three species of sparrows will be certainly nesting and thanks to the counting we will be able to understand the places they prefer to raise their young ones. By counting the sparrows later, compared to last year, we will try to find out if there are any regularities in their distribution before and during their nesting, BSPB said.
Sparrows avoid living in places where noise levels are high and which lack green areas. They prefer an environment of diverse habitats that provides them with the necessary living conditions. BSPB want to know whether this regularity will be maintained or not with a month difference in counting.
