According to President of Rebulic of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, the government has focused its attention mainly on foreign policy issues, but has failed to resolve important problems in the country such as judicial reform, education, healthcare, foreign investment and the government has used the Presidency for political PR.
Rumen Radev - President of the Republic of Bulgaria: “The European Presidency has systematically been used for domestic political piracy and at a time when the protests are multiplying. Moreover, the European Presidency has become an alibi for lack of attitude and indifference to these issues”.
The compliments that are something usual for every European Presidency should not mislead us, Rumen Radev said. According to him, the state of the union is such that Brussels can afford only positive self-assessments. Radev agreed that the Western Balkans is an important priority, but he believes that the migration problem has revealed huge faults, which are challenging the values and the future of the Union.
Rumen Radev - President of the Republic of Bulgaria: “That is why the Western Balkans remained a priority for Sofia, but they fell outside the focus of United Europe”.
President Radev also added that our country is not actively involved in the debate on European security and defence. He urged the government to free themselves from the euphoria and return to the harsh Bulgarian reality as soon as possible.
In response, the Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva quoted results of a survey conducted among the Bulgarians and a review of the European leaders, whose assessment is that Bulgaria has earned a very good reputation after the presidency.
