A man was shot dead in the centre of Botevgrad, Western Bulgaria, late last night, 5th of June. According to information provided by the prosecution and the Ministry of Interior, the killed man is Vladimir Pelov, wanted for escaping from prison on 13th of April this year. Several hours were needed to the prosecutors to confirm the victim’s identity. The reasons for the slow identification of the body were that Pelov died from 3 shots - one in the face and two in the right leg, and also he was not carrying any identity documents.

The other man involved in the shooting is Mario Panchev, who is also known for his criminal record. He is in Sofia’s "Pirogov" emergency hospital in critical condition. Investigators reported that three pistols and a number of bullets were found on the crime scene - one in the grass near the body, one in Pelov's bag and one right next to the body of the killed. This means that Panchev and Pelov were shooting at each other. One of the possible reasons for the conflict between them is unsettled financial deals, as they worked together in the past. The possibility for a third participant in the shooting is not excluded.
Nataliya Nikolova, district prosecutor of Sofia: Definitely, the killed man is Vladimir Pelov, which was proven by dactyloscopic expertise early this morning, 6th of June. During the additional inspection, 7 bullets were found, as I have already mentioned, witnesses close to the victim were questioned, as well as the people who transported him to the hospital in Botevgrad.
Georgi Grigorov - head of the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Interior - Sofia: We had operational information that Pelov had been hiding in Botevgrad for around a month. Each signal that we had received was checked. Pelov was hiding with changed appearance and disguised. And as we suppose, last night, he was moving along the riverbed. The area is dark and overgrown with bushes, and it is very likely that he emerged from the bed of the river.
