Today the Orthodox Church celebrates the Transfiguration of Jesus. For Christian believers, the holiday is one of the evangelical events of the Savior's earthly path - his appearance in heavenly glory to his disciples Peter, John, and James. The Transfiguration Monastery, located seven kilometers north of Veliko Tarnovo, in central northern Bulgaria, also welcomes its temple celebration today.
The Transfiguration Monastery dates back to the 11th century. It is located in a beautiful rocky area on the coast of Yantra, a river in northern Bulgaria, and was one of the most important cultural and educational centers during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.
For three years Zahari Zograf painted the murals and icons in the main monastery church. In the most prominent place, on the southern outer wall of the church, he depicts the monumental wall paintings "The Last Judgment" and "The Wheel of Life" to show the visitors the transience of the human existence.
Each year, on the Transfiguration of Jesus celebration, hundreds of laymen from across the country visit the temple to pray not only for health, but also for insight.
According to popular beliefs on 6th of August, the sun turns its back on the summer and face to the winter, and the migratory birds gather in flocks before fleeing to the warm lands.
