Three men were detained in the evening on 19th of June after trying to place a skimming device on an ATM machine located in Evlogi and Hristo Georgievi boulevard in central Sofia.
The group was followed by the police and caught at the crime scene. All three men have been taken to the Sofia District Court for interviews.
Expert assessment will identifywhat device was placed on the ATM. The practice of the Ministry of the Interior shows that usually the first part of the skimmer is placed at the entrance of the card reader and the other part at a place where it is possible to observe the introduction of the respective PIN code.
Police officers investigate whether it is a criminal offense committed by an organized criminal group or a single case of attempted robbery.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, such devices are first tested at smaller ATMs, then sold on the markets in Europe, even reaching the US and Asia. In the summer, there are cases of placing such types of devices on ATMs in many summer resorts because of the many foreign tourists.
The investigation is on-going.
