Torrential downpours, thunderstorm hit Sofia

There were more than 900 alerts for flooded buildings due to the torrential rain that poured down in Sofia in the early evening on 18^th of June.

Many underpasses and underground stations were flooded. Nearly 2,000 clients of electricity distributor CEZ in Sofia were temporarily left without electricity.

The monitoring of the rivers continues on 19^th of June. Water levels have significantly increased due to heavy rain. Late last night, Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova gave an extraordinary briefing on the flood damages.

For about an hour, about 50 liters of rain per square meter fell in the capital, the mayor said. More than 1,500 alerts were received on the emergency number 112. 900 of them were about flooded buildings and the rest were for flooded underpasses and underground stations. There was a fallen tree in a kindergarten. Fortunately, no one was injured. The levels of the municipal dams are continuously monitored and controlled water release is applied, she added.

The thunder strom caused failures in some underground stations, several entrances were flooded.

Despite the torrential rain, there were no disruptions in the schedule of the underground trains and they ran without delays.
