Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Chair of the Parliamentary Group of GERB (majority partner in the ruling coalition) and Chair of the Committee on Internal Security and Public Order, on 26th of April held a working meeting in Sofia with EU Chief Negotiator for Brexit Michel Barnier. The two shared the common belief that the rights of European citizens living on the Island would be protected after Brexit.
In his capacity of Chairman of the Internal Security and Public Order Committee, Tsvetan Tsvetanov expressed the view that the negotiations between Brussels and London for Brexit should be conducted in such a way that security is not affected. "Over the years, operational police cooperation between Member States has been established through Europol. Britain has one of the best security systems. It is one of the main providers of information on EU security systems,” Tsvetanov said.
Tsvetan Tsvetanov and Michel Barnier agreed that the interruption of this exchange of information would be a retreat and would take away the added value of this process.
Michel Barnier congratulated Tsvetanov for the excellent preparation and implementation of the parliamentary dimension of the Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. Barnier highlighted the success of the historic adoption on 26 March in Sofia of procedural rules for parliamentary scrutiny of Europol's work by national parliaments and the European Parliament.
