The sea swallowed the North Beach in Sunny Beach resort, South-East of Bulgaria, after huge waves destroyed the protective sand dunes. Sea water has carried away almost half the strip along it. In some places the waves have reached the coastal promenade. Four cafes and restaurants on the beach were destroyed and many were flooded.
The entire coastal strip is covered by stacks of waste, including wood beams, stones and tires ejected from the waves. The storm hit the beach in the early hours on Tuesday, 27th of February.
Huge waves flooded the South Beach in Nessebar (another resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast) and literally "ate" the whole strip. The sea has reached the hotels on the first line and the ground floors were flooded. The entire beach is currently under water. Three of the restaurants were partially destroyed. The flood protection that was raised at the end of the season to protect the sand strip and the establishments was completely destroyed.
