They are certified by the International Airport Council - Europe and the WSP certification and independent verification body. The document is a recognition for the actions of the two airports to map and reduce carbon emissions - part of the global airport industry's commitment to climate change.
Carbon accreditation is the only institutionally approved, global programme to certify carbon footprint management at airports around the world. The assessment is independent and recognizes efforts to manage and reduce carbon emissions through 6 levels of certification: Mapping, Reduction, Optimization, Neutrality, Transformation and Transition. Following the achievement of Accreditation Level 1: Mapping in 2019, the airports in Varna and Bourgas are working to reduce the carbon footprint and their new goal is to keep carbon dioxide emissions at the levels of 2015 until 2030. Currently, this is achieved through a wide range of specific energy saving measures and the use of renewable energy sources.
Varna Airport and Bourgas Airport have already set a clear goal to reach Level 3: "Optimization" through better management of electricity and fuel consumption, waste and dangerous cargo. Therefore, in the next few years, airports will make significant investments in projects to replace lighting fixtures and photovoltaic installations. Through various promotional measures, the company actively engages its employees, airport guests, partners and other stakeholders to engage them in the goal, through daily individual and collective contribution to the responsible use of energy, fuels and water.
