Until recently, in a neighbourhood garden in Silistra, a port city in northeastern Bulgaria, a TU-134 aircraft, which was donated to the local civil aviation authority, was rusting more than 30 years ago. On 6th of August, the plane and the area around it are about to acquire a new look. With the voluntary work of the residents of the neighborhood, the empty place is now a recreation area for children and adults.
The aircraft was grounded in the northeastern part of Silistra in 1986 and until 15 years ago it was used as an air center and computer base. Maintenance money, however, ended and active citizens decided to take things in their own hands.
The citizens have found fundings to cover their material costs. They do everything by themselves.
Now in the neighbourhood garden are places for relaxation, sports, entertainment and an outdoor library. The stairs to the plane have been turned into a talent scene. The Municipality of Silistra, the owner of the terrain and the plane, has more ideas for the future.
Lighting and video surveillance are now installed in the place.
