26TH INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION IN VARNA BEGAN

The International Ballet Competition - Varna began on 15^th of July and will take place until 30^th of July.

It is the first professional international ballet competition in the world. By tradition the competition is held every other year in the second half of July at the Open-Air Theatre in the Bulgarian Black Sea coastal city of Varna.

In 2014, the event marks 50th anniversary of its founding in 1964. The patron of the jubilee edition is Bulgaria’s Vice President, Margarita Popova. The event is presented under the auspices of UNESCO and the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova.

As part of the tradition, the flame of the ballet Olympics was lit in the opening night by the youngest participants in the competition. 127 ballet dancers representing 30 countries will compete for the grand prize.

Throughout the years, over 2,500 young talents participated in IBC –Varna.

The chair of the International Jury of 26th- Varna 2014 is prof. Vladimir Vassilev from Russia. The jubilee ballet Olympiad is held in support of the candidature of Varna for European Capital of Culture in 2019.

The International Ballet Competition will be broadcast live at 21:00 on the 15th, 26th, 27th, 29th and 30th July on BNT 2 and BNT World channels.

Special 15 minute reports will show highlights from the IBC- Varna 2014. Viewers will have the opportunity to watch Interviews with world famous ballet dancers and videos from the traditional summer ballet academy on 23^rd and 25^th of July, at 19:45 on BNT2 and at 23:15 on BNT World, and on 26^th of July, at 16:25 on BNT2 and at 18:00 on BNT World.
