300 more video surveilance cameras placed sofia

In order to strengthen security during the Bulgarina EU presidency, the municipality will deploy 300 more cameras for video surveillance in the capital Sofia.

They will be installed along the route from Tsarigradsko shosse boulevard through the National Palace of Culture to Boyana, said Sofia mayor Yordanka Fandakova, who, together with Interior Minister Valentin Radev, presented the unified Sofia security system on 15th of December.

Additional 50 cameras will be installed in the underground, Fandakova said. Thus, from 1st of January, in the capital there will be nearly 3,000 cameras. Part of the new system was built with BGN 2 million received from the government. The municipality has added BGN 1.1 million from its budget, Fandakova said.

The new cameras record vehicle number plates, and if a wanted car is detected, the system will notify the operators. Modern video surveillance may partially analyze traffic disturbances in the capital, but in order to identify all those who drive above the speed limits, for example, the system will be further built upon, Fandakova said.

Minister Radev expressed his satisfaction with the video surveillance system and reminded that it is only one of the elements of the security system that Bulgaria will use during the European presidency. Some of the main boulevards will be partially closed. It will also be possible to close the area around the National Palace on particular days, when certain summits take place.
