bulgarians approve ministerial resignations after bus crash polls

Sixty-one per cent of Bulgarians approved of the resignations of the three ministers after the fatal Svoge bus crash, results of a survey conducted by Alpha Research polling agency, commissioned by Bulgarian National TV, showed on 3rd of September.

Interesting, according to sociologists, are the answers to the question whether the respondents’ trust in the cabinet changes after the resignations. 61% of respondents said this step did not affect them.

Boryana Dimitrova, sociologist from Alfa Research: We will be wrong if we say this means that this case is minor. No, this is something much more important, and these were the reactions of the majority of people. Only the mechanism of ministerial resignation is not enough! This treatment alone does not work - it is necessary, but not enough, she said.

Evidence of change in public attitudes, according to Boryana Dimitrova, from pure political pressure to pressure for changes at all levels of the system, is the high share of people (56.5%) who expect, in addition to the resignations of ministers, to have specific officials punished for the crash.

In conclusion, Alpha Research thinks that the public not so much expect better organisation of coalition relations, but better organisation of the state and real, rather than imitative, control over how institutions and officials perform their duties.
