99,000 litres of drinking water provided for the residents of Svoge

Some 99,000 litres of drinking water in individual packages has been provided for the 12,000 thousand residents of the municipality of Svoge from the reserve, the Director of the Fire Safety and Population Protection Directorate, Chief Commissioner Nikolai Nikolov and the spokesperson of the Cabinet, Anton Kutev, explained at a briefing in the Council of Ministers on August 17.

The municipalities of Plovdiv, Gotse Delchev, Dupnitsa, Ihtiman, Devin and Bachkovo have also joined the assistance through a mechanism of the National Association of Municipalities in the Republic of Bulgaria. Drinking water and water for domestic use, which is certified, is provided in 15 places in the town. The local authorities are working on two options to provide water supply: hydrogeologists are advising the authorities on how to divert the water from the intake structure built under Petrokhan to the village of Iskrets and to increase the volume of the Studena River. This is expected to yield results within a day or two. The second option is to connect the municipality with an underground lake in the system of 200 km of caves.

Nikolov explained that the Studena River has not completely disappeared, but it has a much reduced flow, with the river ending in nothing before coming above ground in the village of Iskrets. There was a similar case in the late 1970s, then the water recovered after 48 hours.

More than 12,000 people in the municipality of Svoge are without water after the flow rate of the Iskretska River decreased significantly over the past two days. The problem affects the town of Svoge, the village of Iskrets, Svidnya and part of the village of Tserovo.
