Archaeologists have found the largest dolmen in Bulgaria. The unique discovery was made in the village of Zlatosel, near the South Bulgarian city of Plovdiv.
The expedition was organized by “Magazine 8” magazine and was led by prof. Valeria Fol.
The dolmen dates from a very early period, at least from the second millennium BC. It is thought to have been the tomb of a Thracian royal family or local aristocratic family.
The researchers found another megalith, which is a one-off in Bulgaria’s territory – a giant “stone egg”. According to prof. Fol, it reflects beliefs of the ancient people associated with the sanctity of stone and symbolizes birth of life.
Prof. Fol explains that ancient people believed that stone was a divine matter.Even there are myths that people descended from stone, she adds. At some point from the development, people built such constructions which are associated with the solar cult. Communities were structured in such a manner that there were people who could order a tomb or sanctuary to be built. The site near Zlatosel is different, it is a large chambered tomb. It is a megalith that has not been found in Bulgaria before, the professor said.
