A MAN SHOOTS FROM HIS HOME IN LYASKOVETS, A POLICEMAN WAS SHOT DEAD AND THREE INJURED

One policeman was shot dead and  three other policemen were injured by a man during a special police operation in the town of Lyaskovets, in the north of Bulgaria, near the city of Veliko Turnovo. The chief secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Svetlozar Lazarov, confirmed the information for BNT. Lazarov stated that earlier in the morning on 14th March, the police undertook the operation following complaints that the man, who lived across from a school, had sent letters to the School Headmaster, threatening the life of the pupils.

At 11:30 on 14th March the perpetrator was successfully detained. He had injuries and was taken to hospital in an ambulance, guarded by five police cars.

The Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Interior has confirmed that the perpetrator was Petko Savov and was mentally ill.

He is 53 year old and has lived in a three storey house in the town of Lyskovets together with his mother. Savov is not married and does not have any children. His home is close to the local school. Since 2011 Savov has lived isolated and has not gone out in public. His mother looked after him.

During the specialized operation the police have seized from Savov’s home 2 hunting rifles and 2 carbines, which he owned legally.

The man showed intolerance towards the children, who played in the school ground and six times sent letters to the Headmaster of the school, intimidating that he would shoot the pupils. The Headmaster said for BNT that the latest letter he received was on 20^th February and respectively informed the local police authorities.

The director of the hospital in Veliko Turnovo said that the condition of the three injured policemen was stable and their lives were not in danger.
