11 people were killed in the floods in the district of Asparuhovo in the Black Sea city of Varna. Two children are still missing and the search continues. One man drowned in the city of Dobrich. Hundreds of people were affected by the flooding after the torrential rains on 19th and 20th June in the North East of Bulgaria. Recovery work is under way in the damaged regions.

On 23rd June, Bulgaria holds a national day of mourning for the flood victims and government offices are flying the flags at half-mast. The victims were remembered in a special church service at 11 a.m. in the cathedral ‘Uspenie Bogorodichno’ (the Assumption of Mary) in Varna. The service was attended by President Rosen Plevneliev.

Teams of Civil Protection Services, military units and municipality continue work on cleaning–up and pumping water out in the flood-striken areas. Volunteers joined the clean up process.

A nationwide campaign through SMS donations was initiated to raise funds to support people affected by the floods.
