A passenger train performed a test run for the first time across the Danube Bridge 2 on 9th April. The trial test was made in preparation for the future use of the railway track at the end of the year.
The passenger train started from the Romanian station Golentsi, 15 km away from Calafat, stopped at the new train station in the Bulgarian town of Vidin and went back. The test was performed at a speed of 110 km per hour. Pusher engine for freight trains was used in the trial.
Danube Bridge 2 was officially opened in the mid 2013, but the railway track was not in use due to some problems with the electrification of 100 metre long section of the track in the Romanian territory.
By the end of the year, train services are expected to start running regularly. BDZ (the Bulgarian State Railways company) already intends to launch an international train line operating from Sofia via Vidin to Budapest. The Romanian railways authorities consider a train service from Krayova to Vidin.
The freight trains will start running in the middle of the year as soon as the electrification problem is resolved.
