The ancient Roman city of Augusta Trayana welcomes visitors and residents of the South Bulgarian city of Stara Zagora. It was restored under a project financed by the Operational Programme “Regional Development”.
The square with amphitheatrically constructed auditorium, thermal baths, fortress walls, the west gate and part of the main street of Augusta Trayana have been fully restored and most of the original elements in them retained. The remains of the Roman city have been uncovered during construction works in the area of the Palace of Justice in the centre of Stara Zagora.
The site was then further studied and archeological excavations went on for many years until the full restoration of the archeological complex.
The main street of the antique Roman city is situated on an area of 7 acres. Today the ancient town is fully restored and illuminated by special multi-colour lights. Visitors have the opportunity to see the original stone tiles and slabs, with which the street was paved in the ancient times.
There are still traces of preserved elements of the two fortress walls. The round shaped square is illuminated in yellow, green, red and blue lights. A majestic pedestal with Emperor’s horse statue stands in it.
Emperor Trajan was the founder of the ancient city. Augusta Trayna began experiencing a real construction boom during the reign of Emperor Marcus.
