ARCHAEOLOGISTS FIND A UNIQUE BRONZE CROSS IN A BASILICA FROM THE EARLY CHRISTIANITY

A unique bronze cross from 5-6 century was discovered by archaeologists in the town of Sandanski, in the South West of Bulgaria. The relic was found during excavations in the largest excavation site, the Episcopal Basilica, dating since the dawn of Christianity. The bronze Christian cross was found during works near the baptistery of the basilica, the part of the building where baptizing used to take place. The length of the cross is 54 cm.

"Such cross design, with circles at the ends of the cross, is very rare in the rest of Europe. The cross has a spike, through which it was fixed in the earth, and the religious procession would begin. The procession used to walk through the town or took place in the basilica’, explained Vladimir Petrov, the director of the Museum of Archaeology in Sandanski.

During the excavation works the archaeologists found another room of the basilica with mosaics.

"What is interesting is that the mosaics were made of small partitioned pieces of marble combined with coloured stones, attempting to depict a floral ornament" - said Petkov.

A furnace built of bricks was discovered in the newly found room. According to archaeologists the facility was used to heat water.
