This year, in the first zoo in the Balkans – Sofia zoo, the number of babies is increasingly growing. The latest arrival is a five-day old buffalo. There is also a baby boom among the rare species such as the Egyptian vulture, Capuchin monkeys, skunks and many others. Ostriches are expecting parents too - two female ostriches are sitting on eggs to hatch.

The Capuchin monkeys are called ‘the punks’ in the zoo. The newborn capuchin baby was a surprise even for the zoo keepers, because until recently they thought ‘the punks’ were all male. Obviously not. The little capuchin baby has not been given a name yet as it still hangs with his Mum and the zoo keepers cannot identify its gender.

Doctor Ivan Ivanov, the Director of Sofia zoo says that for the past 40 years, this is the first time a baby capuchin monkey has been born in the zoo.

The youngest and smallest inhabitants of the zoo are only several centimeters long and they are the babies of the marmosets.

Attached to the backs of their fathers, the newborns are difficult to notice from a first sight, but the way the marmosets families keep their infants from visitors and officials of the zoo is indicative that they are only small babies.

The zoo in Sofia also rejoiced over the birth of skunks babies. This is the first time skunks have been born in the zoo. The parents arrived from Bucharest last year. Emilya looks after the skunks family, which has five members. According to her, they feel good. She says that in nature, when skunks feel threatened they would spray an unpleasant smell to repel potential attacks, but with us they haven’t done it so far, Emilya explains.

Sofia zoo officials are proud of the newly born Egyptian vulture which is the second generation hatched in the zoo. As it comes from an endangered species, when it grows it will be released in the wild in order to help the species increase its population in nature.

As the Director of Sofia zoo, Dr Ivan Ivanov, says zoo babies are one of the very best things about the zoo.
