BULGARIA’S MINISTER FOR EDUCATION RESINGS

Bulgaria’s Minister for Education, Todor Tanev, submitted resignation on 1st of February.

On 28th of January, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissovs aked for prof. Tanev’s resignation because of poor communication between the management of the ministry and the public in relation to proposed changes to the new school syllabus that caused tense public debate.

Prof. Tanev will stay in the PM’s team as an advisor. On Saturday, 30th of January, PM Borissov said Tanev was a good professional, highly respected in the academic and scientific communities and speaks 7 languages. Tanev said that one of the reasons to accept the invitation was that he was the author of some draft laws in the area of education, which were subject to adoption.

Tanev was an appointee of a junior coalition partner in the ruling government, the centre-right Refomist Bloc. PM Borissov said he would leave it up to the Reformist Bloc to propose a nomination to replace prof. Tanev.

On Friday, 29th of January, the Reformist Bloc nominated Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva as the new minister for education.
