In a telephone conversation with and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on 28th of July, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister sought assistance from the EU border agency Frontex to provide technical equipment, vessels and helicopters to secure the borders.

Merkel said she would raise the matter with the European Commission and would talk with the German Interior Minister as regards assistance on the part of Germany.

PM Borissov and German Chancellor Merkel also discussed the increasingly complicated and difficult situation in relation to the migrant crisis, Bulgaria’s Council of Ministers said.

PM Borissov briefed Merkel on the actions undertaken by Bulgaria to ensure the security and safety at its borders, including after the events in Turkey.

Borissov said that he, the Bulgarian Minister of Defence and the management of the Ministry of Interior personally monitor the situation at the borders and provided additional staff, patrols and technical equipment, which required spending more funds from the budget.

The two also discussed Bulgaria’s request for a stand by the European Commission for coordination of the follow-up actions by Bulgaria following the decision by the Arbitration Court in Geneva about Belene nuclear power plant project.
