On 15th of January, the former chairperson of Sofia City Court, Vladimira Yaneva, was imposed 1 year suspended sentence and 3 years of probation in relation with the so called operation “Worms”.
Sofia City Court found Yaneva guilty for having authorized the use of special surveillance devices for periods which were longer than the maxim periods defined by the law.
On 25th of March 2014 Yaneva authorised the use of special surveillance devices as regards the automated information system of Bulgaria's Ministry of Interior – the central police database – for a period of 120 days, which was an extension to previous authorisations and thus exceeded the limit of 6 months allowed by the law.
The other defendant in the same case, the former director of Internal Security in the Ministry of interior (MoI), Todor Kostadinov, was acquitted on the charges of submitting false data in the requests. He was fined to pay 3,000 BGN for unauthorised entry in the Ministry of Interior’s information system for making inquiries on the person Ivo Kamenov.
Yaneva did not appear in court today and the sentence was read out in her absence.
Both defendants have to pay 89 BGN each for expenses on the case.
The “Worms” scandal was triggered about a year ago when arguments appeared in the media about alleged eavesdropping of protesters against the government of prime minister Plamen Oresharski (in 2013-2014).
In March 2015, Yaneva was suspended as chair of Sofia City Court and as a judge because of pretrial proceedings launched against her in connection with operation "Worms".
