The work of the Bulgaria-North Macedonia Joint Commission on historical and educational issues will be completed within a few months. This was announced after the meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and North Macedonia Ekaterina Zaharieva and Nikola Dimitrov on 25th of February. They discussed the commission's work, general infrastructure projects, and future membership of North Macedonia in NATO.
This is the first visit of Nikola Dimitrov after the renaming of his country and only a week after the unanimously ratified NATO entry protocol.
The two discussed bilateral political relations, specific projects for investment in banking and agriculture, and the work of a joint interdisciplinary commission working on settlinmg history-related issues.
Zaharieva said she hoped the commission’s work to be completed within a few months.
The commission has already proposed that three historical figures - Tsar Samuil, St. Kliment Ohridski and Naum - be celebrated together by the two countries, and now proceed to more problematic historical periods such as the Revival and the Second World War.
If this commission proposes specific changes to the curricula to several months, it will not be necessary to draw up an annex to Bulgaria’s Good Neighbourly Relations Treaty with North Macedonia.
