Bulgaria has met its obligations under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive to update the initial assessment of the state of the marine environment, the criteria for determining good status in the marine environment, and the set of environmental targets and associated indicators.
This creates an opportunity to close proceedings in which case C-510/20 has been brought against the country before the CJEU.
On 31 March 2022, electronic reporting to the European Environment Agency was finalised. The reporting completed the first stage of the development of the second Marine Strategy of the Republic of Bulgaria for the period 2022-2027.
With the completion of the reporting, the country's commitment has been fulfilled, thereby ending the breach of EU law.
The update of the Marine Strategy was based on the results of a contract between the Institute of Oceanology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Environmental Management Enterprise, with the active support of the Black Sea Basin Directorate.
