Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva commented on 9th of November that it could be said that Bulgaria would be the reason why the whole European Union could not apply the Istanbul Convention. During parliamentary control, she answered the question asked by BSP MP Ivo Hristov about the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence.
Ekaterina Zaharieva, Minister of Foreign Affairs: We can not support the Council's decision on the conclusion, on behalf of the EU, of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, precisely because of the Constitutional Court ruling you quoted. So this will be the position that Bulgaria will express to the Council and which, according to the procedure, means that the accession of the whole EU to the Convention will cease.
