The new world champion in mental calculation for children up to 12 years old is Bulgarian Kaloyan Geshev.
At the World Mental Calculation Championship held in Germany, the Bulgarian boy from Sofia faced 56 competitors from 13 countries and managed to win the largest number of points in a contested competition.
He writes with his left hand. He will soon be 12. He does not think he is special. But multiplies and divides rows of three-digit numbers faster than a calculator. Arithmetic is his favourite subject.
“Math is kind of fun I'd say," the little champion says.
He practices at least 2-3 hours a day. He says he doesn't get bored. Factoring and sums of square he takes for child's play.
For the second time in the history of the championship, a child from Europe became the winner.
Kaloyan loves long walks in nature and dreams of becoming a teacher. So that more children will not be afraid of mathematics.
"This is a child I am sure the world will be talking about in the years to come!" says math teacher Plamen Rumpalov from Sofia's 125 Boyan Penev School, where Kaloyan studies.
