Space colony inhabited by humans with the aim to clean the orbit around the Earth from space debris. This is a project created by students from grade 12 of the High School of Mathematics “Dr Petar Beron” in city of Varna at the north Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The project is called ‘Green Space’, created by Nedelcho Laskov, Ivan Popov, Atanas Kovachev and was awarded the Grand Prize of NASA Ames Space Settlement Design Contest 2014. The prize is a recognition of the young students’ hard work, knowledge and talent.

vlcsnap-2014-03-26-11h57m23s15In the BNT morning programme ‘The Day Begins’, on 25th March, the presenters introduced the viewers to another group of students from the High School of Mathematics in Varna, who wanted to take part in the international mathematics competition in Seoul, but needed financial support to purchase the airplane tickets.

On 26th March, the BNT team of ‘The Day Begins’ introduced the viewers to a team of students from the High School of Mathematics “Dr Petar Beron” in Varna, who are the prize winners in the NASA contest.

The students who won the prizes in the annual competiton organized by the USA’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration agency (NASA) for space settlement designs, have worked in different study groups at the Astronomical Observatory and Planetarium "N. Copernik" in Varna. Their instructor, Vessela Radeva, explained that this was the most difficult and most prestigious competition open to students.

vlcsnap-2014-03-26-11h57m30s180“This is the first time we have won the Grand Prize in this contest, which means that the best projects have been selected from over 700 entries in total. There is a tie for the Grand Prize and we share it with the students’ team from India.

In addition, ‘Green Space’ in not the only Bulgarian project that won a prize.", Vessela Radeva said. She explained that the grade 12 team - a large team, with the project Space Settlement "Daphne" – was awarded the grade 12 First Prize and the team from grade 11 received the Honorable Mention for the project Space Settlement "Aqua de Vita". "So we are very proud of the prize winners. We have come a long way - starting from third place in the ranking, through second and first place to deserve the Grand Prize”, Dr Radeva added.

The young people need to attend the International Space Development Conference in order to present their projects to the professional jury of NASA engineers and astronauts, as well as the NASA award ceremony, where they will represent Bulgaria.

The student’s teams however are facing a difficulty, because they need to find the necessary funds to buy the airplane tickets in order to go to NASA. Therefore the students, their teachers and the team of the BNT morning programme ‘The Day Begins’ again are kindly asking for financial support from viewers, institutions and anybody willing to help the young scientists.
