Bulgarian students won 5 medals at the International Mathematics Olympiad in the UK

The best Bulgarian mathematics students won 5 medals at the most prestigious mathematics competition in the world for the year. At the 65th International Mathematics Olympiad the Bulgarian national team won 3 silver and 2 bronze medals and one honorary diploma. The Olympiad was held from 11 to 22 July in the UK and brought together 609 students from 108 countries.

The silver medals were won by Marin Hristov (12th grade, Sofia High School of Mathematics), Angel Hristov (11th grade, High School of Mathematics in Burgas) and Bilyana Dimitrova (12th grade, Sofia High School of Mathematics), who achieved the fourth result in the world among the 81 participating girls.

The bronze medals went to Veselin Markovic (11th grade, High School of Mathematics in Varna) and Boris Gachevski (12th grade, Sofia High School of Mathematics), and very little was enough for a medal for Viktor Kostadinov (12th grade, School of Mathematics in Plovdiv), who received an honorary diploma.

Their coaches are prof. Stanislav Kharizanov (Institute of Information and Communication Technologies – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences ) and Assistant Proffesor Stoyan Boev (American University in Bulgaria) and Dragomir Grozev.

In the team ranking Bulgaria was placed 27th in the world and 11th in Europe with 126 points, falling behind the 25th place in 2023.

The preparation and participation in the Olympiad were supported by the Ministry of Education and Science, the Union of Mathematicians in Bulgaria, the American Foundation for Bulgaria and the Association of Science Olympic Teams.

The International Mathematics Olympiad is the first Science Olympiad. It was established in 1959 in Romania. Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania are the only countries that have participated in all editions of the Olympiad since its establishment.
