The agreement with Poland for modernisation of Bulgaria’s Soviet-made MiG 29 fighter aircrafts has been finalised, said Bulgaria’s Minister of Defence, Nikolai Nenchev, after a meeting of Parliament’s Defence Committee on 6th of October. In April, Bulgaria will receive 6 repaired and 2 rented engines for a period of 2 years. As a result of the contract, Bulgaria will save 24 million BGN, Nenchev assured.
The agreement has been finalised, but it is not known yet when it will be signed.
Poland will modernise 6 Bulgarian engines, the cost of which is about 1,023,000 euro per engine, said Nenchev after the meeting of the defence committee and assured that the contract was exceptionally beneficial to Bulgaria.
He explained he was familiar with the letter sent by the Russian Corporation MIG. Through this letter, Russia warned that Poland did not have the license needed to modernize Bulgaria’s fighter aircrafts. The minister also said that his resignation was not on the agenda of the meeting and that he even received support and understanding of opposition MPs.
The proposal for signing an agreement with Poland on the repair of the aircrafts and the programme for stabilization of Bulgaria’s air forces has to be tabled on Wednesday, 7th of October,
