The new 2 lev coin has been entered in circulation as of 7th of December, the Bulgarian National Bank announced.
The new coin weighs 9 grams and is larger than the 1 lev coin. The inner circle on the reverse of the coin features the stylized image of Paisiis hilendarski (Paisius of Hilendar), a key figure in Bulgarian Revival in 18th – 19th century, most famous for writing the Slavonic-Bulgarian History.
The 2 lev banknotes will remain legal tender until the central bank withdraws them from circulation.
The release of the new coin became necessary because of the increase in prices over the past 15 years. This suggests replacement of the low denomination notes with coins and issuing of high denomination notes.
