On 10th of August, Bulgaria’s President Rosen Plevneliev issued a decree to set the date of the local elections and a referendum on 25th of October.
Voters will be asked to answer one question in the referendum: “Do you support making it possible to vote from distance by using electronic means in elections and referendums?”
Last year, the Head of State proposed the referendum to include three questions. In addition to asking voters whether they approved electronic voting, the other two questions were on mandatory voting and majoritarian voting, but were rejected by MPs.
On the day of issuing the decree, the youth organization of the centre-right GERB party stood first in a queue in front of the building of the Bulgarian Electoral Commission for registration of the party in the forthcoming local elections. The young representatives explained they would take turns and stand in the queue on shifts to make sure they keep the tradition and register first.
