The Sofia District Court on April 14 revoked the detention order for Bulgaria’s former Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov and ordered the Ministry of Interior to pay him 310 BGN for the costs of the case.
The decision is subject to appeal within 14 days.
Prior to the court's decision today, his lawyer argued that no specific facts were stated in the grounds for detention. The National Police legal advisers on their part argued that the order cited the pre-trial proceedings where the facts and circumstances were stated.
"One of the grounds cited by the legal advisers of the National Police is that detention was mandatory in order to ensure that Mr Borissov did not interfere with the investigation. In the period preceding and accompanying his detention, investigative actions were carried out by an incompetent authority. That is to say, those actions have no evidentiary value in the first place. And his detention was definitely not necessary," Stanislava Karakusheva, Boyko Borisov’s lawyer told BNT.
On March 17, GERB leader and former Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Boyko Borissov; former Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov and former head of Borissov's government press office, Sevdelina Arnaudova, were detained for 24 hours and released the next day without being charged. They were arrested in connection with allegations for extortion by former gambling tycoon Vassil Bozhkov, who currently in Dubai but is investigated in Bulgaria on multiple criminal charges.
Lawyer Menko Menkov filed appeals against their detention. On 28 March, the three were questioned before a prosecutor and an investigator.
